Political Roundup: Expense Report Baller Edition

The presidential candidates have released their expense reports, and we've got the scoop on where they are spending their money.

Here's what our politicos are spending their Benjamins on:

-- Newt Gingrich is getting the most press coverage about his spending habits. The former House Speaker has spent more than $500,000 on privately chartered flights from Moby Dick Airways -- a company that provides "republican presidential travel."

Newt claims that he didn't realize how much money was being spent on private travel until his fundraisers quit -- and has since switched to commercial transportation. (Ouch!)

-- Tim Pawlenty might be the best GOP boss. The former governor of Minnesota has spent more than $580,000 on salaries -- a significantly higher percentage than other candidates.

-- Mitt Romney is spending more money than other candidates on administrative expenses, meaning lots of political consultants and security guards. He's also spent almost $750,000 on vendors in New Hampshire (the state he's hoping to win).

-- Ron Paul
's campaign is going for broke on yummy food. They seem to love burgers, BBQ and farmers markets. Who knew he was a foodie?!

-- Michele Bachmann and President Obama are spending the majority of their money on fundraising. While Michele has spent nearly $700,000 on this end, the POTUS spent $5 million on fundraising (and hired some 150 campaign staffers).

Together, the candidates have spent $32 million already. Who knew they were all ballers?!

SarahPAC Paid For 'Republican Presidential Travel'

One of the most frustrating aspects of this political season is that Sarah Palin has pretty much refused to comment on whether or not she'll be running for President.

She spends her time, traveling around the country and declares, "I can win," but still won't officially announce her candidacy for the Republican Presidential Nomination.

And, this latest news doesn't make it any easier:

According to papers filed with the Federal Election Commission this week, SarahPAC, Sarah's political action committee, paid about $7,000 to a business called "Republican Presidential Travel."

It seems that the business is a private airline spin-off by Moby Dick Airways, which is often used by official Republican candidate Newt Gingrich, and only operates in Alaska.

Awesome. Thanks for keeping the "Will she? Won't she?" debate alive and well, Sarah.

Newt & Cally Do Charleston Tea Party

GOP Presidential Candidate Newt Gingrich, and his wife, Cally, attended a town hall at the Charleston City Hall in North Charleston, South Carolina, last night.

Here's a little recap:

Michele Bachmann & Newt Gingrich Will Celebrate July 4 Together

Michele Bachmann and Newt Gingrich will be participating in the Clear Lake July 4 parade.

The stop is one that many political candidates campaigning in Iowa have made before -- including the Clintons and Mitt Romney.

Sources say that, though Ron Paul will also have supporters walking in the parade; the congressman himself will not be there.

Newt Gingrich Rebuilds Campaign Team

Slowly, but surely, it looks like Newt Gingrich is getting back on track with his presidential campaign -- after losing most of his staff.

He's hired the former Mike Huckabee backers to spearhead his campaign:

-- Public Service Commissioner Stan Wise
-- State Representative Harry Geisinger
-- Grassroots Leader Maria Strollo Zack

He's also tapped Governor Nathan Deal to serve as his Georgia campaign chairman.

Sounds like some good news (finally) for Newt!

Video: Attempted Glittering Of Michele Bachmann

Apparently, throwing glitter at politicos that are vying for the GOP nomination is becoming a thing.

Who knew?

It all started with the successful "glittering" of Newt Gingrich back in May.  Then, last week a member of Code Pink tried to glitter attack Tim Pawlenty.  And now, someone tried to do the same to Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Following Michele's speech to conservative bloggers at the RightOnline Conference in Minneapolis on Saturday, a woman charged the stage and threw glitter at her -- but completely missing the Representative and getting taken away by security while yelling, "You can run but you can't hide."

Michele, it seems, didn't even notice what was going on. You can see it all for yourself in the video, below.

Presidential Campaign 2012: Newt's Staff Says 'Peace Out!'

Despite having nearly his entire campaign staff jump ship, Newt Gingrich is still running for President.

Err! It might be a little hard to do without a team Newt, but as they say if there's a will there's a way!

We've compiled a list of the peeps who now have Newt on their "Do Not Call" list.

Meet David Carney: Former Newt Gingrinch Aide (Who Quit Yesterday)

David Carney is a New Hampshire-based political consultant and was considered a key player in Newt Gingrinch's 2012 campaign -- until he quit yesterday.

He was there from the beginning helping Newt test the presidential waters. But, the avid scuba diver must have seen sharks because got out pretty fast!

David has experience with several Republican campaigns including Texas Gov. Rick  Perry and Bob Dole. He also served as White House director of political affairs for George H.W. Bush.

Sam Dawson: Newt Gingrich's Former Senior Advisor (He Quit This Week)

Sam Dawson was Newt Gingrich's senior advisor. He quit yesterday.

So, who is Sam?

He is a South Carolina native with three decades of campaign experience. He's worked on the 1992 Bush-Quayle campaign, the Buddy Roemer campaign in Louisiana in addition to many others in the GOP.

Sam was also a senior consultant to the National Republican Congressional Committee in 2000 and served as the NRCC's executive director and political director.

Photo & Bio: Craig Schoenfeld, Ex-Newt Gingrich Aide

Craig Schoenfeld was the executive director for Newt Gingrich's presidential campaign in Iowa.

He's worked with several other campaigners in the past, including former President George W. Bush. He has Masters of Arts from Drake University in Journalism, which might explain why he's so Twitter-savvy.

His bio makes him sound kind of boring, but it seems like the man has a sense of humor!

We are hoping that he will tweet why he quit working with Newt yesterday (but, we doubt it).

Meet Katon Dawson: Newt Gingrich's Former Campaign Advisor

Meet Katon Dawson.

He is Newt Gingrich's former advisor and a native of South Carolina.

Katon has held several political positions in the state -- including GOP party chair in 2002 -- and he was candidate for RNC chairman in 2009, coming in second to Michael Steele.

He likely won some brownie points with when he became the first state Republican to endorse his "Drill Here. Drill Now, Pay Less" campaign.

We are not sure what happened, but he is no longer with Newt -- because he quit yesterday.

Newt Gingrich Hits Facebook: He's Still Running ...

Not long after several members of New Gingrich's staff walked out the door, he hit Facebook and said he is still running.

"I am committed to running the substantive, solutions-oriented campaign I set out to run earlier this spring. The campaign begins anew Sunday in Los Angeles," Newt posted.

Welp, kids, looks like Newt ain't phased by the mass exodus. It also appears that he is looking for a new campaign manager.

Photo & Bio: Rob Johnson, Ex-Newt Gingrich Aide (He Quit Today)

Meet Rob Johnson, Newt Gingrich's former campaign manager (he quite today).

The 36-year-old was previously the manager for Texas Governor Rick Perry's reelection campaign. He left this post to work for Newt.

Rob is married with two cute kids and likes local Austin bands, according to his Facebook profile.

He seems pretty sweet on Facebook, but take a look at this video of him arguing during a debate with a Democrat back in his Rick Perry days. We can see how the feisty man might have gotten into a fight with Newt.

Yikes!

Politickin' Ain't Easy: Newt Gingrich Gets Glitter Bombed

Politicians campaigning in Minnesota, beware -- there is a political glitter monster on the loose!

(No. We are not kidding.)

Self-proclaimed "Political Activist" Nick Espinosa approached Newt Gingrich and his wife Callista on Tuesday, during their appearance at a book signing at a Minneapolis hotel, and hit them with a glitter bomb.

Nick gave Newt a glitter shower as he urged him to adopt some more gay-friendly political views.

"Feel the rainbow!" he yelled.

This isn't the first time Nick has attacked a politician in a weird way.

Last year, he confronted Minnesota Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer on immigration at the Minnesota Children's Forum debate -- with $20 worth of pennies. (Ouch!)

Also last year, he freaked Independent Party candidate Tom Horner out with a "Dora the Explorer" doll.

Uh, maybe we need to get Nick off the crack and back on his meds?

Did You Know? ... Newt Gingrich's sister, Candace, is a lesbian. Our editor, Kelly Ann Collins, did an exclusive interview with her -- way back in the 90s.

Newt Gingrich Announces Candidacy For President On Twitter

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is looking to unseat President Barack Obama.

Newt showed off his social networking skills by making the official announcement via Twitter and Facebook.

He is the first high-profile candidate to officially enter the race for the 2012 Republican nomination.

(Perhaps his announcement will entice other potential candidates to step up to the plate?)

Newt Gingrich: No. 1 Potential 2012 Presidential Politico (Among Tweeps)

Who's on top when it comes to potential 2012 presidential candidates ... on Twitter?

Turns out that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has a sizeable edge with more than 1.3 million followers.

Here's a breakdown:

  1. @NewtGingrich (1.3 million followers)
  2. @RealDonaldTrump (503,000 followers)
  3. @SarahPalinUSA (485,000 followers)
  4. @GovMikehuckabee (146,000 followers)
  5. @MicheleBachmann (42,000 followers)
  6. @repronpaul (41,000 followers)
  7. @MittRomney (36,000 followers)

Of course, all of them combined are still far behind @BarackObama whose tweeting followers are nearing 7.5 million.

But, if Twitterland had its say, Lady Gaga might be our new POTUS.

No politician beats neither @ladygaga (9.4 million followers) nor @justinbieber (8.9 million followers).

The State Of The President's NCAA Brackets

Man, everyone is hating on Obama for his March Madness brackets -- and not because he picked Kansas going all the way.

Since Obama, who's a bit of basketball freak, sat down with ESPN and showed off his choices for the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship*, Republicans have been giving him flack about it.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus took to Twitter to complain that the President was putting college basketball over working to resolve the budget. Then, possible candidate for Republican Presidential Nomination, Newt Gingrich, took a swipe; commenting that "We need a commander in chief not a spectator in chief."

Well, you can't please everyone all of the time.

So, how are Obama's picks doing? Actually, pretty good.

Going into the semi-finals, most of his teams are still alive. Of course, VCU threw off some of his picks, but that happened to everyone.

Next year, we're just going with the President's picks.

*POTUS also made a bracket for the Women's Championship, but who really cares about that?
