Escaped Bronx Zoo Cobra: Publicity Stunt?

Team Glittarazzi was in New York City this week -- tip-toeing from train to hotel and restaurant to taxi -- in hopes that the Bronx Zoo's fanged, fugitive Egyptian cobra would not slither out of a manhole and eat us alive.

But now, we're thinking this might've just been one big, fear-driven publicity stunt.

Venom Energy Drink announced today that it offering a year's supply of free product to the Bronx Zoo employee who can "find and tame the venomous beast."

"It's going to take nerves of steel, cat-like reflexes and some really thick gloves, preferably steel mesh," said Dan Huff, director of marketing for Venom Energy Drink. "So we're glad the Bronx Zoo's experts are on the job. Charming and capturing a deadly snake is for experts, but we've tried to replicate the adrenaline thrill with our custom energy blend. It's just the sort of venom you actually want running through your veins."

For hints on the cobra's whereabouts, just logon to your favorite social media site. Apparently, the cobra's on Twitter.

Slimy, slithery venom-pushing bastards.

The Newseum Tweep Really Loves It Some News

We get it.

You're the Newseum. You like news.

But, do you really have to use a big exclamation point when talking about the 30th anniversary of Ronald Reagan's assassination attempt?

OK. We realize an intern, who was born post-Reagan presidency, circa 1992, probably tweeted this.

And, we think it will be fascinating to hear what Jerry Parr, former head of President Reagan's security detail, has to say about the nearly fatal incident when he comes to the Newseum Wednesday night.

But, here's some advice from we, the bloggers: you might want to consider using the ever-so-popular period -- also known as a full stop or dot (.) -- when tweeting about tragic events in American history.

Just sayin'.

Facebooking For The Flag ... Well, Sort Of

It seems that the "War on Terror" is joining the social networking revolution.

According to a recent report, the U.S. Military's Central Command (CENTCOM) has just awarded a contract worth more than $2.5 million to an LA-based startup to help create and direct online conversations in a pro-America slant.

The program will create several online personas (per person working in the group), each with their own elaborate -- and completely fabricated -- history. It is meant as a way to fight the growth of Islamic extremism online.

Though don't expect to be seeing any new facebook friends promoting the U.S. Military’s agenda in your newsfeed anytime soon.  The program will only operate outside the U.S. and in Middle Eastern languages.

Damn, we were really hoping to up our number of followers.

J.K. Rowling’s Twitter is Quite Possibly the Worst Verified Twitter Feed Ever

J.K. Rowling is one of the best selling authors of all time.

The Harry Potter books have sold more than 400 million copies. That means more people have read her words than Hemingway, Dickens, Melville, or any of those other dead white guys you were forced to read in school.

And she writes about magic and wizards, which are way cooler than whales. (Deal with it, Herman!)

So, when we found out that not only does Rowling have a verified twitter account, but she was tweeting as recently as last week, we were all super excited to read it.  And then we did.

In 17 months, the woman has tweeted six times (and three of them were from the first day).

And every tweet is pretty much the same message – "This is the real me, but you won't be hearing from me often I'm afraid, as pen and paper are my priority at the moment."

What the hell, J.K.?  How many pages was Deathly Hollows? More than 750? And you can't come up with a 140 characters on how much you hated the ending to Lost?

Pfft!

Robocop Statue: It's Really Happening

In case you missed it, earlier this month the mayor of Detroit, Dave Bing, accidentally sparked a campaign to create a statue of Robocop -- the titular character of the 80s sci-fi film set in a futuristic version of the Motor City.

Someone on Twitter suggested the city erect statue to lure in tourists, like the one of Rocky in Philadelphia. Instead of ignoring the suggestion, the mayor replied by shooting down the idea.

And that, of course, led to an Internet community response campaign to raise $50,000 to privately build the statue -- which was successful.

We're now getting our first look at the process it'll take to actually make this happen [See: Q&A with Pete Hottelet (he is one of the people leading the campaign)]. And, what you think would be a fly-by-night joke operation seems to be serious endeavor.

According Pete, the group received a half the funds from single donor.  He also claims that they're working with the city to find the right spot for the statue, but have a backup plan for a location on private property if Detroit refuses to accept the gift.

They group is also getting assistance from Fred Barton Productions, which has been working on a life-size RoboCop model for the past five years, as well as several people who were involved in the first film.

So, yeah, it's really happening.

Oh, snap! Congress twits vote for tweet life

Republicans voted yesterday to change mobile device rules to allow members to use them in the House chamber.

The only rule? It cannot "impair decorum." (But, we're hoping it will.)

Check out this pic (left) that Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida took yesterday -- during today's swearing-in of the new Congress (psst ... the new mobile device rules haven't been finalized yet).

Oh, snap! She's impairing decorum.

Capitol Christmas Tree don't need no birds -- it can tweet for itself

Speaker Nancy Pelosi lit the Capitol Christmas Tree last night, and then tweeted:

Capitol Christmas tree (67 ft WY Engelmann spruce) is officially lit(with energy saving LED lights)!" ~ Nancy Pelosi via Twitter

But, whodathunkit -- the Capitol Christmas Tree doesn't need Nancy. It can tweet for itself.

"Thank you to all my fans and followers that braved the cold last night for my lighting. It was great to see everyone!" ~ Capitol Christmas Tree

"In case you missed the lighting ceremony, check out coverage on @CPSAN http://tinyurl.com/34oycfg " ~ Capitol Christmas Tree

"Are you at the lighting ceremony? If so, tweet, tweet"  ~ Capitol Christmas Tree

Tweet with the Capitol Christmas Tree and its tweeps yourself @TracktheTree.
