'A Legacy With Layers': Sweet New Vidalia Onion Museum Opens

Washington, D.C.'s very own James Beard Award-winning chef, Jeffrey Buben of Vidalia, is in Georgia today, hosting the grand opening ceremonies for the first-ever Vidalia onion museum.

That's right, everyone's favorite sweet veggie, the vidalia, has it's very own museum.

"A Legacy With Layers" opens today in none other than Vidalia, Ga.

The museum's hands-on, interactive exhibits the vidalia's history, its unique growing region and explains its significance in cooking -- and as well as what makes them so sweet.

The venue's home page even has a Bobby Flay quote on it, so it's definitely legit.

Hopefully nobody will tear up during the ribbon cutting. ...

Chief Usher Admiral Stephen W. Rochon Leaving White House For Homeland Security Job

Director of the President's Executive Residence and Chief Usher Admiral Stephen W. Rochon (pictured, left, with Team Glittarazzi) is leaving the White House to become the Department of Homeland Security's Principal Executive for Strategic Integration at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

"I am truly delighted to accept this great opportunity to assist the U.S. Customs and Border Protection with developing and implementing a strategic integration program to help protect our U.S. borders," the Admiral said.

"My past four years as the Director of the Executive Residence and Chief Usher at the White House has been most rewarding, and I will greatly miss my phenomenal staff, who proudly provides superior service to the President and his First Family, but I am humbled and grateful to the President for having the confidence in me to take on this new challenge, and I look forward to returning home to the Department of Homeland Security."

Did you know? ... Admiral Rochon is the eighth person and first-ever African American to serve as Director of the President's Executive Residence and "Chief Usher."  President George W. Bush appointed Admiral Rochon to the position in February 2007 and President Obama asked him to continue when he took office in January 2009.

Washington Capitals Players Talk About Royal Wedding

Count Caps players among those who will pass on watching the broadcast of the British royal wedding of Will and Kate across the pond in jolly olde England.

"It's definitely not for me. I won't be taking that in ... I'm sure it will be cool, you know for people that are into that stuff, but for me, I got a few other things to think about," says wingman Eric Fehr.

With royal wedding coverage starting in the wee hours of the morning, we're thinking Eric will be dreaming about Game 1 of the Caps' clash with the Tampa Bay Lightning less than 24 hours later Friday night.

Caps defenseman Karl Alzner says he would watch the highlights of the multi-million dollar affair if they are broadcast on the NHL Network, but doesn't think that will happen.

"It's neat, but it's not my cup of tea," Karl says.

Fellow defenseman John Carlson says he heard about the royal wedding, but says he has absolutely no intention of getting up to watch live coverage, which reportedly begins as early as 3 a.m.

"I think its kind of stupid," John says of the overly hyped knot-tying affair.

We sympathize. Blue blood or not, a white wedding is a white wedding.

Note ... Shooting for the movie, based on the book of the same name by Mark Halperin, started this week and also stars Ed Harris as John McCain. We'll definitely be watching it.

Superman: No Longer An American?

There are few comic book characters as quintessentially American as Superman.

He fights for truth, justice and the American way.  Oh, and his costume is red, white and blue.

So, it's kind of shocking that DC comics is featuring a short story in an upcoming issue of Action Comics, in which the Man of Steel will renounce his American citizenship.

Well, the guy is an illegal alien, right? (Nerd joke!)

The story, titled the "The Incident" and penned by The Dark Knight screenwriter David Goyer, will center around Superman flying to Tehran to give his non-violent support for protestors, which creates an international incident and causes the President's National Security Advisor to admonish the superhero for his actions.

In response, Supes claims that the world is too interconnected now for him to be aligned with just one country, so he decides to renounce his American citizenship so he can intervene throughout the world without endangering America's foreign policy.

(It's kind of grownup for a comic book.)

Could this be a major plot point to be adapted to other Superman storylines or simply a one shot meant to be a commentary on international politics? Comic Book geeks will just have to wait and see.

Is Your Boyfriend Cheating? There's An App For That (iPhone Tracker Software)

If you suspect your significant other is cheating on you, buy s/he an iPhone or a 3G iPad.

Two researchers say they have found that the location of the Apple devices are repeatedly filed and stored, along with a timestamp in an unencrpyted, unprotected file. The "consolidated.db" file contains latitude and longitude coordinates -- and, when the devices are synchronized with a computer (which is what happens every time you connect to iTunes), the data is transferred to your computer.

And, it is kind of crazy that even if you turn off "Location Services," this tracking information is still recorded -- and can be mapped out with the iPhone Tracker Software.

Pete Warden, an ex-Apple engineer, and Alasdair Allan, who has written a book on iPhone programming, say they are not sure why Apple is gathering the data.

Apple, meanwhile, reportedly plans to ship iPhone 5 in September. Will they fix the built-in stalker mechanism in the new toy -- or just make it harder to find?

Regardless, cheetahs best beware.

Goodbye, Friendster: Download Account Info Before May 31 (Or, Lose It Forever)

Before we lived in a Facebook world, anyone who was on a social network was on Friendster.

(Like us.)

It was one of the very first social networking sites and is largely credited with pioneering the concept.

So, if you were hip and cool -- and online in 2002/2003 -- you probably had a Friendster account. In fact, you probably still do have a Friendster account (since there's that whole everything-you-post-on-the-Internet-is-forever thing).

But, that's about to change.

Friendster has announced that on May 31 it will delete all its users' information and data as part of a move to be more of a content destination, which is pretty much what MySpace turned into.

But, fear not.

If you have/had a Friendster account, you can download all your info to your hard drive via a specialty app before it gets deleted.

Hurry, before you forever lose those blogs posts on the awesomeness of Jimmy Eats World; and photos of yourself in popped collars!

Case in point.

Can You Take My Picture, Bro?

Vacationing with your family can really suck sometimes. But, vacationing with long lost family? It's probably pretty awesome.

Just ask Rick Hill.

The Massachusetts man was visiting Waikiki, Hawaii with his family, when he asked a passing stranger to take a photo of them.

The man, Joe Parker, obliged -- and, when he asked where the group was from, it turned out to be not that far from where he grew in Massachusetts before moving to Hawaii.

So, Rick and Joe began playing the "do you know so-and-so?" game. And it turned out that they did have someone in common, their dad.

Yep, the two men were long lost half-brothers.

As Rick explained to a reporter, "I kind of knew I had a brother, but I never was able to meet him and didn't know where he was from and didn't know how to contact him."

Finding your long-lost half-brother? Sure beats a puka-shell necklace as a souvenir.

No Horsin' Around, Trojan (Vibrators) Coming Soon ... To A CVS Near You

Trojan, a leader in the business of population-control services, apparently hopes to insert a little vibration in their corner store business.

The company announced they are bringing Trojan Vibrations, their line of vibrators, to drugstores and mass merchandisers.

Hummm.

The product line includes the
Vibrating Tri∙Phoria, which offers 24 unique combinations for men and women, and the Vibrating Pulse. Hardly shocking, the vibrator biz has swelled into a billion dollar market and usage rates are on the rise, according to industry estimates.

More than half of American women (53%) and 45% of men have used a vibrator in their lifetime, according to a survey by The Center for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana University.

Editor's note ... We had no idea that men use vibrators -- especially 45% of them. Wow. We learn something new every day. We found a couple of websites here and here and here to help us understand exactly how they use them.

Barack Obama's Birth Certificate Reveals ... His Mom's Name Was Stanley

OK, Barack Obama is a junior, actually the second, but we get it.

Of course, that means his dad, the (gasp!) Muslim from Kenya shares the same name.

And his mother's first name? Well, bless her heart, the 18-year-old Witchita, Kan., native signed her name "(Stanley) Ann Dunham Obama" on the certificate.

Stanley? Poor thing.

"At a time of great consequence for this country – when we should be debating how we win the future, reduce our deficit, deal with high gas prices, and bring stability to the Middle East, Washington, DC, was once again distracted by a fake issue," White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said this morning.

"The President's hope is that with this step, we can move on to debating the bigger issues that matter to the American people and the future of the country."

But really, Stanley?

Oh, Donald. You should be ashamed. But, we have to admit that we're proud of your unique investigative journalism skillzzz.

Note: More exciting to us is our recent discovery that one of our staffers was born at the same hospital as President Obama ... albeit quite few years later!

White House Press Gaggle: President Obama Birth Certificate

Here are some interesting excerpts from this morning's White House Press Gaggle, regarding President Obama's birth certificate, featuring Press Secretary Jay Carney, Director of Communications Dan Pfeiffer and White House Counsel Bob Bauer at 8:48 A.M. EDT:

Q    Bob, can you explain why President Obama let this drag on for four years? Was it Donald Trump that prompted you to issue this?
MR. BAUER:  I’ll let Dan --
MR. PFEIFFER:  Sure.

Q    I know you expected that question, right?  (Laughter.)
MR. PFEIFFER:  He even said you would be the one who would ask it.  (Laughter.)

I don’t think this dragged on for four years because this was a resolved -- for those of you who remember the campaign, this issue was resolved in 2008.  And it has not been an issue, none of you have asked about it, called about it, reported on it until the last few weeks.

And as I said earlier, it probably would have been -- a lot of the pundits out there have talked about the fact that this whole birther debate has been really bad for the Republican Party and would probably be good for the President politically.  But despite that, the President, as I said, was struck by how this was crowding out the debate, particularly around the budget, on important issues, and was an example of the sort of sideshows that our politics focuses on instead of the real challenges that we have to confront as a country.

And so that’s why he made this decision now, because it became an issue that transcended sort of this -- it essentially was something that was talked about, as I said, from the nether regions of the Internet onto mainstream network newscasts.  In fact, Jay has been asked about this just yesterday in this room.

Q    So I guess the implication is that you did get political advantage by having not released this until today, over the course of the last four years?
MR. PFEIFFER:  There has been -- no one that I can recall actually asked us to -- we were asked to release the President’s birth certificate in 2008.  We did that.  And then no one -- it never -- up until a few weeks ago, there was never an issue about that that wasn’t the birth certificate from any credible individual or media outlet.  And it hasn’t been until -- I mean, Jay was asked about this yesterday --

Q    You’ve got two certified copies, according to this study.  You have these physical --
MR. PFEIFFER:  Yes.  I showed you one.  Just one.

Q    You showed us a photocopy of one.
MR. PFEIFFER:  No, I showed you --

Q    Does that have a stamp?
MR. PFEIFFER:  It has a seal on it.

Q    Not to give Donald Trump more publicity than he has, but is he the person who sort of -- sort of that bridge between what you're calling a fringe and the mainstream?  Do you think that he’s the reason why this tripped the switch to a level where you now have to deal with something you thought was dealt with?
MR. PFEIFFER:  It’s not for me to say why mainstream media organizations began to cover this debate.  They’ll have to answer that for themselves.

Q    How concerned were you about running against Donald Trump in a general election?
MR. PFEIFFER:  I'd refer any questions on the election to the campaign.

Olympian Carl Lewis Can't Run (For Office)

Poor Carl Lewis.

The former Olympic runner, who won nine gold medals in the 80s and 90s, can't run for State Senator in his home state of New Jersey.

Yesterday, New Jersey Lt. Governor/Secretary of State Kim Guadagno ruled that Carl did not meet the state's residency requirements and is thus ineligible to run.

He'd been approached by state Democrats to run in the June primary for the 8th Legislative District and would have been the track and field legend's first foray in politics.

Sorry, Carl.

Introducing Cupcake Vodka (Yes, Your Prayers Have Been Answered)

We can't tell if its creator was a genius or a madman (probably somewhere in the middle), but there is now a cupcake-flavored vodka out there.

And we're in awe.

Produced by Underdog Wine & Spirits, the recently announced Cupcake Vodka ($17.99 per bottle) comes in four flavors: Original, Chiffon, Frosting, and Devil's Food.

With the plethora of flavored vodka out there, it's actually a little surprising that someone hasn't thought or tried something like this before. We're so impressed with its originality that we've ordered a case for the Glittarazzi office.

Well, that and also because we love cupcakes and vodka.
