Humanitarians Come Together To Help 13-Year-Old Girl 'Live Life With An Open Heart'

Vicky-Cabrera-2012-07-20

Meet Vicky Cabrera.

She is a bright and energetic 13-year-old girl that is a victim of medical malpractice.

Vicky had some problems with her heart, but as she went through surgery in Venezuela, her condition worsened -- which forced her mom to travel to the USA to find some better care.

Last year, she underwent a second surgery at Miami Children’s Hospital, which left her family with a heavy financial burden. And now, Vicky needs a third surgery, which will cost her parents even more since she does not qualify for health insurance.

But, her loved ones are now being given some relief thanks to an initiative, "Live Life With An Open Heart," which was launched in June by a collective group of Washington, D.C., humanitarians:

  • John Villamil
  • John Alexiades (Opera Ultra Lounge owner)
  • Gio Gonzalez (Nationals pitcher)
  • Jennifer Matta
  • Max (Gio's father)
  • Patricia DeLima

And, last night, Vicky's supporters came together again with friends and family at Opera Ultra Lounge in Washington, D.C., to raise additional funds to help pay off her second surgery -- and to help fund her third procedure, which will take place later this year.

“... In Venezuela, they told me she has no hope," Vicky's mom, Marfa Mata, said. “Many people can ask why I decided to have the surgery in the U.S. with the high cost. I am scared. She never had trouble with her valves before the first surgery here in Venezuela. That’s why I had the second one in the U.S. They saved her."
