The Department of Education building in Washington, D.C., was the ultimate field-trip destination this week for a very lucky group of local children who took part in the "Let's Read. Let's Move." series of summer reading events.
Wednesday's event was highlighted by readings and exercise routines by LeVar Burton (actor, "Star Trek" and "Roots," and host of "Reading Rainbow), LaVar Arrington (former NFL linebacker), Laura Kaeppeler (Miss America), and Education Secretary Arne Duncan.
During a questionairre with LaVar Arrington, he revealed that he was named after LeVar Burton -- and that this event was the first time that he had been given the opportunity to meet his namesake. LaVar led an excercise session with the children in attendance with games, such as the fitness-themed "Hot Potato."
Miss America's Q & A session was filled with children professing their admiration for her "crown and smile." She was also asked what she liked to do for fun. She said that she loves to read and watch all kinds of sports. LeVar Burton responded that he likes to read for fun, and that he is currently reading four books. A child followed up by asking "At the same time?!"
We 100% approve of "Let's Read. Let's Move." and cannot wait for the next event! Want to join the fun? Learn more, here.
