New technology is helping understaffed police departments decide where their forces are most needed.
The LAPD is using an approach called "predictive policing."
A computer utilizes algorithms to determine what parts of the city could most benefit from extra cops by figuring out patterns based on what's happened in those areas. And, while the dystopian future in which Tom Cruise lived in "Minority Report" was pretty scary, the idea behind "predictive policing" is much nicer. Instead of nabbing criminals and shipping them off to prison, the idea is to prevent the crimes from happening so that nobody gets into trouble.
