We Love ... This Awesome Throwable Ball Camera

ballcamera20111018

Okay readers, if you were wondering what to get us here at @Glittarazzi for the holidays: we want this awesome ball camera.

It takes interactive fully panoramic images. It’s so cool! WE NEED IT!

The ball was created by Jonas Pfeil for his diploma thesis for the Department of Computer Engineering and Microelectronics at the Technische Universität Berlin (or Berlin Institute of Technology) and was presented as the Emerging Technologies demonstration at the 4th ACM SIGGRAPH Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques in Asia.

You can watch the video (below) to see a full explanation of the ball, but it works like this: The ball is covered in cellphone camera modules, which all take a picture at the same time -- when it reaches its highest point when tossed in the air. You can then download the info to your computer and use specially designed software to explore the 360-degree view compiled from all the various images

Currently, the Throwable Panoramic Ball Camera’s patent is pending and, we suspect, so is a new name.

But, we still want it. Now.
