Full-Court Press: Verdict's In & John Edwards Is Getting Off ... Well, Kind Of

john edwards 2012 5 31

Well, after nine days of deliberations, we finally have a verdict in the John Edwards trial.

Jurors didn't believe the government proved its criminal case against the former Democratic Veep candidate (and one-time presidential hopeful) for violating campaign-finance law when he used money given to him by wealthy donors to cover up his affair and the resulting love child.

They found John not guilty on one count and deadlocked on the other five. John told reporters on the courthouse steps that while he didn't believe he broke the law, "I did an awful, awful lot that was wrong and there is no one else responsible for my sins."

Early reports indicate that prosecutors will probably not file for a new trial on the five charges and that John says he plans to rededicate his life to helping poor children.

The worst part is that no new juicy details came out of the trial. The affair with Rielle Hunter, the sex tape, the 100-something heiress obsessed with John, and now-deceased Elizabeth Edwards's meltdown in a private hangar in which she ripped her shirt off were all old news.

Ugh. Seriously? Worst political criminal trial ... EVER!
