Spring is in the air, and so are the cravings for a fun Girls’ Night Out. But, will that martini be good for my bikini?
Luckily, I’ve got “master mixologist to the celebrities” Natalie Bovis-Nelsen, a.k.a. The Liquid Muse, on speed dial.
Here’s her prescription for a swimsuit-friendly Girls Night Out. …

KAC: Hey Natalie! What are the best drinks for people who are watching their weight?
(Please don’t take my champagne away!)

NBN: Hi Kelly! A shot of vodka, gin or whiskey is not what makes someone fat. The real danger for people watching their weight is in the mixers. Cocktails, while delicious, are loaded with sugar. Fruit juice, simple syrup and even garnishes are calorie- and carb-laden. I’m a sucker for champagne – anywhere, anytime – but if on a diet, it is a good idea to not have more than a glass. (Ok, a glass-and-a-half …) Lately, I’ve been trying to shape up, myself, so I will share my “cocktail lite” with you and your readers:

On A Liquid Diet

One ounce of spirit
a squeeze of lime
a dash of bitters
sparkling water

Shake spirit, lime juice and bitters with ice. Pour into cocktail glass,
top with flavored sparkling water.

KAC: Wow, Natalie. Thanks! That sounds bitteralicious! But what about someone who is not only watching their weight, but trying to limit their alcohol intake, because, well, smelling like vodka at that 8 a.m. team meeting just doesn’t feel as sexy as it used to?

NBN: Funny you should ask … I am working on a non-alcoholic cocktail book (geared especially toward pregnant women) at the moment. I think that a well made ‘mocktail’ is great for people who can’t (or) don’t want to drink.

KAC: Great! Can’t wait. Mocktinis actually are one of my favorite school night pleasures. But for double the pleasure on weekends, what do you think about these new vodkas that claim to burn fat? I mean, come on, sounds like something too good to be true — or healthful!?!

NBN: Just as other products (pills, shakes, etc.) bogusly claim to burn fat, I’d say great marketing idea … but I wouldn’t be quick to fall for it.

KAC: Well said, Natalie. Thanks so much for sharing some of your liquid musings with us. We will definitely be thinking of you –and taking your advice –when we hit the town this weekend!

Psst! The Liquid Muse’s secret health-conscience ingredient is sparkling water. :-)
